A Wild and Woolly Tasmanian Spring at GaSP

I have a new crop of beautiful, English watering cans sprouting in The Garden Shed and Pantry (GaSP) for helping to germinate your seeds and to keep them gently watered until being planted out in the garden. I also have a huge range of Tasmanian (Southern Harvest) and Italian (Franchi) seeds for growing your way to health and prosperity! And, when you’ve done all that, I have Shani’s soap for gardeners, to clean you up ūüôā Read more below…..

Local Soap for Gardeners
Shani is my new helper for the 1st market of each month and she also is a maker of many wonderful things, including a soap for gardeners’ hands. Not only that, but she has sourced paper to wrap the soap from¬†The Paperman, who you may have seen on Landline recently.¬†He makes paper from apple waste and more, in NW ¬†Tasmania. Come and talk to Shani and buy some soap at this Sunday’s market. See more below…
September Sourdough & Cultured Butter Workshop
The never-ending story of my sourdough workshops continues. I love them and so do all the participants. Easy, foolproof, nutritious, delicious, no-knead sourdough made with freshly milled, organic, Australian flours; what could be better?Add to that your own, super easy to make, cultured butter, which costs an arm and a leg in the shops, and you are on a winner for your health and taste buds.
You can read all about it here. Click here to book. $55.

Hugh’s lamingtons, tarts and GF breads
Hugh has gone all out this week but again you would be best to be at the market early not to miss out on Hugh’s very popular lamingtons, lemon tarts, vanilla¬†slices and GF sourdough breads at my stall… Last market I sold out again! Don’t go home disappointed.¬†

Tasmanian Wakame and Kombu
There is no other ocean I would want to eat from than the ocean south of Australia. We are so very lucky to have Craig Sanderson harvesting wakame and now kombu off the east coast of Tasmania. Seaweeds are full of minerals including iodine, calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium, zinc and much more. Read more below….

Nuage Blanc and Quark
Paris Creek is a biodynamic dairy in South Australia owned by Helmut and Ulli whose inspirational story you can read about here. From time to time I indulge in a batch of their most exquisite soft cheese which they call Nuage Blanc (soft cloud) and I have some to sell as well. They also make quark, which you can read about the health benefits of, here. Quark is on order and will be arriving soon. Reply to this email if you would like me to put some aside for you.

Square eftpos
The Garden Shed and Pantry now has credit card, debit card, chip and contactless payment facilities! Square is a simple and cheap system suited to every form of transaction. It may be cheap but it is not free, so I would still prefer cash but no longer will there be any inconvenience if you do not have enough cash with you!

Organic Sourdough & Proving Bowl Kit now available for Australia wide delivery

There has been an enormous amount of interest in all of my workshops recently, particularly Sourdough Bread Making, so, for those too far away to attend, I  offer the kit and a proving bowl for purchase online. Adding up all of the Sourdough Workshops that I have conducted plus all of the kits that have been sold at the Cygnet Market and online, would mean that I have sold over 300 kits in the 4 years since I have been offering them. Below, you can read some of the feedback I have received about the kits.

I recommend Four Leaf Organic grains

The Organic Sourdough & Proving Bowl Kit has the recipe and all of my tips and tricks for making delicious and easy sourdough bread, the ingredients required for two standard loaves, plus the rye-based starter which ensures excellent bread into the future.  In addition, it has a proving bowl which has been designed specifically for sourdough bread. I only post on Mondays or Tuesdays so your starter does not sit over the weekend in a Post Office, instead of in your fridge!

The ingredients include the special sourdough starter and the flours are all organic flours of the highest quality from Four Leaf Milling in South Australia.  Flour from dry-land farming in South Australia has all of the characteristics that are best suited to sourdough bread-making since the sourdough method originated thousands of years ago in Egypt, another dry land.

Again, the price for the Organic Sourdough & Proving Bowl Kit is $65 and includes postage within Australia.

Since I don’t have an online payment facility, ordering is by email (gasp4winns@gmail.com) and payment by direct bank transfer. After order confirmation I will send you the bank transfer details.

Thanks, Ruth

Hi Kate. Thrilled with the result from your kit. Made two loaves and rest of starter in fridge for next weekend. Beautiful crust and flavour. Kit easy to use. Will be in touch before Mother’s Day to get one sent to my mum. Many thanks. Anne.

Hello Kate,

I’m not sure if you remember me; you were kind enough to help me on my way to a successful sourdough bread baker after sending my kit¬†. See attached photographs of the loaves I made on Saturday. We are so happy. ¬†I have planned a greater wholemeal and rye content for this weekend’s bake. We enjoy a substantial percentage of wholemeal/rye in our bread. Anyhow, the crust and crumb are exactly as we like it and the oven spring is great.

One is a ‘normal’ sourdough with only bread spices and the other is an olive sourdough (yummy toasted on Sunday morning with a fried egg on it!).Thank you again for all your help. With your guidance (and taking away the fear of baking SD) I’m now where I wanted to be when I started my research.

Kindest regards,

Ingrid

Online Shopping at The Garden Shed and Pantry

I love shopping online as much as anyone but it is costly and time consuming for a one woman business to have an online shop with all the bells and whistles so I have a more simple system which requires a little old fashioned connection between you, the customer and me, the shop owner. Sometimes it is nice to have this connection and for the sale not to be so sterile and anonymous. I certainly am much happier knowing that I have offered advice or answered questions or simply connected with you the customer as I would if you came to my market stall or home shop.
My business could not exist without the internet and I have become proficient at using it to my advantage; whether I be looking for new products, ordering from farmers near and far, checking the latest prices for The Garden Shed and Pantry or receiving email orders from all over Australia.
