Sometimes I am very sceptical about the names given to herb and spice blends; are they really authentic, are they really used in Morocco, Spain, France or wherever they claim to be? Well, a few years ago I spent quite some time in France and I can tell you that Herbes de Provence is a very popular herb mix there.
When winters are cold and snowy and the sunset is early it is nice to have good quality dried herbs at hand in the kitchen. Even in summer it is sometimes handy not to have to rush to the garden for fresh herbs, but use a nice, reliable, organic herb mix to give a dish a boost.
Herbes de Provence can contain various herbs so I was pleased when I opened my first bag of this blend, at The Garden Shed and Pantry, to find that it had just the right aroma, transporting me back to happy days in a French farmhouse kitchen. The list of herbs in this batch is basil, marjoram, oregano, rosemary and thyme. In France, savory is commonly included.
